Coin Collecting Value Guide

4 September 2011

What does the term “Proof-63″ (speaking about coins) mean?

I am completely new to coin collecting, and I have a guide to all U.S. coins. It shows me the value of the coins. Over the values/prices are letter/number combos. i.e. G-4, MS-63, EF-40, etc. I have come across one that says, “Proof-63,” and it does not list what the meaning of it is in the guide. I would greatly appreciate it if you could fill me in. Thanks so much, Alex.

Proof means that the coin is a proof coin, a coin struck with polished dies on a polished blank to produce a coin with mirror finishes and extremely good detail. The designation for proof coins goes up to 64 so a proof 63 coin is a nearly perfect proof coin.
